Beyond the Job Title: 5 Strategies for Finding Your Value Independent of Your Work

When you attach your identity to your job, you stop yourself from thriving in your career. It’s time to take back your life!

Detaching yourself from your job is the best thing you can do for your career.

Yes, you’re supposed to care about your job on some level. Your job impacts your whole life. But your whole life should not be about your job.

When you become so sucked into your job that you’re afraid to make a mistake, your personal and professional development suffers.

Your skills fall behind, and you hold yourself back from opportunities for advancement.

That’s how you end up stuck at a dead-end.

When you define yourself by what it is that you do for work, it impacts your ability to thrive:

  • When things don’t go your way, it negatively affects your sense of self-worth
  • Instead of advocating for yourself, you become a people pleaser
  • You sacrifice your boundaries to prove your value to your boss
  • You settle for less instead of asking for what you deserve

But It’s Normal To Be Emotionally Attached to My Job, Isn’t It?

It’s fine if you’re happy with your job. That’s what I want for you, friend!

What’s not fine is when you’re so emotional about your job that you forget that you are a whole person outside of it. When everything becomes about your job, you won’t want to do what you have to do to stay on top of your career growth.

Your focus becomes on proving you’re indispensable to your boss instead of pursuing the things in life that you deserve. You accomplish less because you avoid anything that you don’t think you can already do.

What if you were excited about new challenges instead of being afraid of them?

Embracing discomfort in your career development journey is how you begin to thrive.

If you want to feel more confident in your career, you need to separate who you are from what you do.

1. Rethink the way you look at success. Having a prestigious job title and a high salary won’t do you any good if you’re miserable. Get clear on what it is that you want out of life, and pursue a career that supports that.

2. Honor your boundaries. Your job impacts your life. When you accept less than what you deserve, you take that energy with you everywhere. Don’t neglect your own needs for the sake of meeting somebody else’s.

3. Recognize your own value. Allowing external things to determine your value is often the reason why you remain in situations where you know you’re not happy. Be confident in what you bring to the table.

4. Find the right opportunities for you. You’re never going to be the perfect candidate. Instead of changing who you are to fit a job description, identify your values and pursue opportunities that align with them.

5. Celebrate your achievements. Don’t get so focused on getting the job done that you forget to pay proper attention to your own accomplishments. Keeping track of the impact you make is how you set yourself up for advancement. Toot your own horn!
