Explain the benefits & cons of company perks

Don't Be Fooled By The Perks

career advice company culture interview tips job search

What is the truth behind the perks?

It may seem great, but sometimes there is a dark side to all those employee incentives and no one is talking about it.

A job that offers free lunch, an on-site gym, and a cool branded sweatshirt might seem like a great place to work. But you need to look further than all the free company swag before you accept that offer.

Just because it’s attractive on the surface does not mean that it’s right for you.

You may genuinely enjoy all of these things, but it is a lot more to having a good job than some nice-looking extras. Most of the time, this type of situation is not what it seems. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Always be skeptical of employers who are just a little too excited about fringe benefits.

Don’t believe the hype. Good company culture is more than just perks.

A good job should support your whole life. Being expected to put your employer over everything will never be a good thing no matter how many free water bottles they give you.

An iPad does not justify working overtime on a regular basis.

Employers use perks to entice and motivate candidates. They want to make the company seem like it cares by offering you all these amazing rewards.

But be careful that you don’t end up with a shiny new pair of golden handcuffs.

That fancy onsite cafeteria may become the reason you never leave the office. Unlimited PTO won’t mean a thing if you’re not paid enough to keep the lights on.

Perks and Benefits are not the same. So, don’t treat it that way.

Being able to bring your dog to work is cute, but health insurance and 401K are better. Do not let a company game room distract you from what really matters.

The right perks can definitely contribute to a positive work environment. I’m not saying it can’t. But they should not be replacing things that will contribute to your overall quality of life. An employer that offers fresh fruit but no vacation time doesn’t care about you.

These are the types of things you need to keep in mind in your job search.

Before you walk into that interview, get clear on your expectations, and don’t let them dazzle you with extras when they can’t even get the basics right.

See the role OUTSIDE of the perks & see if you're still excited about it.

Set the terms for your new role before you start negotiating.

Whatever you do, don't settle!
