Do you Know What’s Next for You in Your Career?

Having a plan for your professional growth is how you stay ahead of the game and on top of your success.

If the only time you think about what you want from your job is when you’re looking for a new one, you need to reevaluate your whole career.

Having a good job is not something that happens one time and then you never have to worry about it again. Your career is a lifelong journey and so is your professional development.

By assuming that the job you have now is as good as it can get, you’re costing yourself hundreds of thousands of dollars. Just imagine all the big opportunities you are missing out on because you’d rather stay comfortable than seek greater.

Stop telling yourself you don’t have what it takes. If you don’t want to do the work to learn a new skill or get to know a new environment, that’s on you.

But taking the easy way out now is just going to make things harder for you in the end

Here’s what happens to your career when you choose to stay at a job with no clear path for growth:

  • Your skill set suffers and you fall behind
  • The cost of living goes up, but your salary stays the same
  • It gets harder to find new job opportunities when you need to
  • You get stuck at a dead-end because you can’t do anything else

Don’t stay at a job that is no longer serving you just for the sake of a steady paycheck.

You don’t necessarily have to leave your job to grow in your career. But you do have to be clear on how the job you have now works into your overall plan for growth.

And if you don’t have a plan for growth, friend you better get one!

Think about what you want out of life and how your career can get you there. It could be an opportunity to do something new right now waiting for you to take it. But thinking about your career in terms of how long you can stretch this one role you have now is holding you back.

Climbing the corporate ladder isn’t all there is to career development either. So before you start thinking it’s nothing out there for you because you don’t want to be the next CEO one day, don’t.

Just putting your head down and doing your job, hoping that someday you’ll get a raise and a promotion is not helping your professional development.

Don’t get so caught up chasing something long-term that you forget about right in front of you.

It is a lot of power in planning your next steps.

You’re worried too much about the next 10 years and not enough about the next 10 weeks.

Developing in your career takes more than just showing up and working hard. You have to be intentional about the moves that you are making every day. Think about more than just clocking in and clocking out and getting paid.

You need a plan for your personal and professional growth if you want to feel fulfilled in your career. But you don’t need to stress yourself out thinking too far ahead.

You can start growing in your career right now. Here’s what you need to be thinking about:

  • What new skills could you learn in this role that will help you in the next one?
  • Who can you connect with at your job to help get you closer to where you want to be?
  • Are you setting attainable goals? What’s something you could achieve in the next 7 days?
  • How can you use this opportunity to expand your horizons and experience something new?

You don’t always have to be looking for a new job, but you do always have to be working towards something.

Staying on top of your career growth is how you make sure you are always living the life you deserve, without worrying about how you’re going to keep the lights on if things go south.

Create Your Own Growth Opportunities

You are the only one who has the power to decide where your career takes you. Don’t wait for somebody else to make that decision for you. Go after what it is that you deserve on your own.
